To estimate shot speed from a phone video, measure the ball’s travel against a known scale and divide by elapsed time. The result is only useful when the scale, timing, and camera view describe the same movement.
Start with the original recording. Watch the strike before you measure anything. You should be able to follow the ball from contact into its flight. If you cannot tell which object is the ball, an automatic track may struggle too. A clearer clip is more useful than extra decimal places.
Establish a distance scale
Pixels describe positions in an image. They do not describe metres on the pitch until you supply a scale. Kicky uses a real football diameter of 22 cm as its reference. Its apparent size helps turn movement in the image into an estimate of physical movement.
That reference carries assumptions. A blurred ball can look wider than a sharp ball. A partly hidden ball can look smaller. The ball also changes apparent size as it moves closer or farther away. A single visible diameter does not make every point in the scene equally easy to measure.
Pitch markings can help you understand the view, but do not assume every visible length is suitable calibration. The reference should relate to the depth and direction of the movement you want to measure. A nearby object and a distant ball do not share a simple pixel scale.
Keep the original timing
The time between ball positions belongs to the capture, not to how slowly you choose to watch it. Slow playback is useful for inspection. It is not a reason to treat the ball as moving more slowly in real life. Keep the original file so that the recording’s timing stays available.
Be careful with clips saved from messaging apps or edited highlight reels. An export may change playback timing or remove useful detail. If you do not know what happened during export, return to the camera file. Do not compensate with a guessed timing value. That would make the answer look more certain than it is.
Choose a useful camera view
A fixed camera makes the ball’s movement easier to separate from camera movement. Keep the player, contact, and early flight visible. Leave room for the ball to travel within the frame. Avoid zooming during the kick. A close view of the player’s face tells you little about the ball’s path.
Depth remains a problem. A ball moving towards the lens may travel far without crossing much of the image. A side view may show that travel more clearly, but can hide the goal line. Choose the view for the question you want to answer, and accept what that view cannot show.
Read the filming guide before the next session. The aim is a clear record of the event. You do not need to copy a television highlight angle. A steady view with visible contact is usually a better starting point for reviewing your own technique.
Check the track before the number
Watch the marked up replay. Does the track follow the ball after contact? Does it jump to a boot, a pitch marking, or another ball? A smooth looking overlay can still follow the wrong object. If the track looks wrong, treat the resulting speed as doubtful.
An unavailable speed is also useful information. It tells you the system could not supply that measurement. Do not replace it with a guess from the shot’s appearance. Sound, camera movement, and slow playback can all change how powerful a strike feels to a viewer.
Use the estimate to compare practice
Keep your setup consistent when you compare attempts. Record the same task with the same camera position and review both contact and direction. Look for changes that appear across your practice. A single unusually high estimate deserves a replay check before it becomes your new benchmark.
