What does expected goals measure, and what does it not?

Expected goals, or xG, estimates how likely a shot is to become a goal from the chance information a model uses. It does not measure shot speed, guarantee a goal, or provide a complete judgement of kicking technique.

The word expected can sound like a verdict on what a player should have done. It is better read as a model’s estimate for a type of chance. The actual attempt still has its own outcome. A difficult chance can become a goal, and an inviting chance can be missed.

The model describes a chance

An xG model learns from recorded shots and their outcomes. Depending on the model, information can include where the shot came from, its angle, and how the chance developed. The model uses the information available to it. Details that were not recorded cannot quietly become part of its judgement.

That is why you should ask which model produced a figure before comparing it with another. Models may use different inputs, training examples, or definitions. The label xG does not make every estimate interchangeable. Read the method and the coverage alongside the output, especially when the underlying chance is unusual.

A likely outcome is not a promise

A chance estimate and the result of the attempt answer different questions. The estimate describes the opportunity using the model’s information. The outcome tells you what happened. A missed chance does not by itself prove that the estimate was wrong. Nor does a goal prove that the chance was easy.

Repeated shots provide more context than a memorable attempt. Even then, interpretation needs care. The mix of chances, the opponents, and the situations can change. A total can describe a set of opportunities without explaining every cause behind the score. Keep the underlying attempts available when you discuss what the figure means.

Speed answers a different question

Shot speed concerns the movement of the ball after the strike. A fast attempt can come from an awkward angle or head away from the target. A controlled finish can come from a favourable position. Knowing how quickly the ball travelled does not supply all the information needed to describe the chance.

Likewise, an xG estimate does not reveal how the player coordinated the kick. It does not replace watching the approach, support step, contact, and balance. If your practice question is about cleaner contact with the non-preferred foot, a technique review is more directly useful than a chance label.

A goal decision is another question

A goal decision asks whether the ball went in. Kicky predicts that outcome from the clip and marks the replay. That prediction is not an xG estimate. A goal timestamp identifies a moment in the detected event. It is not a probability and should not be read as one.

There is also a camera limit. Goal detection from a single view tops out in the low to mid eighties percent. A ball in front of the net and a ball inside it can appear as the same pixels. Neither a speed figure nor a coaching paragraph repairs that missing depth information.

Use the measure that fits your question

If you want to discuss the quality of chances a team creates, xG can support that discussion when its method is clear. If you want to inspect an individual strike, begin with the recording. Ask what you can see and what you want to improve. Then choose the measurement that helps answer that question.

For example, a shot can miss because it travels away from the intended target. Watch contact and direction before deciding that more power is the answer. A chance estimate might describe the opportunity, but your practice focus can still concern control. Keep those ideas connected without treating them as the same measure.
